Ola Electric Eyes Transition to Ferrite Magnet Motors Amid Rare Earth Shortage; Unveils New Sports Scooter Range

Ola Electric is making a big change in India’s EV market. They plan to switch to ferrite magnet motors in their vehicles. This move will cut down how much they need to import rare earth materials. It’s part of a bigger trend in India, where companies are focusing on local production and new ideas for growth.

At Sankalp 2025, Ola Electric also introduced a new sports scooter lineup. This reinforces their position as a fast-growing brand in India.

The ferrite magnet motor, which uses iron oxide, is a good alternative to motors that rely on rare earth materials. These materials can be affected by supply chain issues and trade disputes. Founder Bhavish Aggarwal said that Ola Electric will start using ferrite motors in all their products over the next three quarters. This shows they’re serious about creating a strong supply chain and protecting themselves from problems in the global market.

The event also included the launch of high-performance sports scooters, like the S1 Pro Sport. These scooters should be available early next year. By combining design, AI features, and a better user experience with MoveOS 6, Ola is making products that tech-savvy customers want. Having already sold close to one million EVs, this launch is a turning point in their sales strategy.

Ola Electric is also working on its technology with the Bharat cell 46100 and 46120 variants. Deliveries of the Bharat 4680 cell are expected soon. The 4680 is India’s first locally made lithium-ion cell. It represents how Indian brands are using local research and development to increase sales and stay competitive.

The brand also introduced its Gen 4 platform, which will be used for future two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers. It will give a 76% increase in peak power and lower costs by 41%. This focus on innovation and affordability is key to Ola’s goal of moving from just increasing sales to achieving steady and profitable growth.

Even though Ola Electric’s sales have dropped this year, they are still optimistic. With special prices for the holiday season, sports scooter launches, and vehicles powered by Bharat cells, Ola aims to gain back momentum and stay at the top of the D2C brands in FY25.

For those watching the D2C startup IPO scene in India, Ola’s move to ferrite magnet motors, sports scooters, and in-house tech shows the strength of the D2C business model in India. In a world with rare earth crises and uncertainty, Ola Electric is proving that local innovation and customer-focused growth are the best ways to achieve sustainable mobility in the future.
