Vikas Khanna Backs Kolkata Chai Co to Accelerate Global Growth of Indian Chai

Michelin-starred chef Vikas Khanna has made a strategic investment in Kolkata Chai Co., marking a significant milestone for the fast-growing premium beverage brand as it scales its presence across the United States. The investment, made through the newly formed Bungalow Hospitality Investments, underscores the growing momentum behind authentic Indian food and beverage brands building global consumer businesses.

The partnership goes beyond capital, combining investment, brand collaboration, and product integration to accelerate Kolkata Chai Co.’s next phase of growth. As part of the agreement, the brand’s signature Masala Chai will be featured across Bungalow Hospitality Management’s New York restaurant portfolio, including GupShup and the upcoming Punjab Meet House, alongside a series of limited-time collaborative menu offerings. The move strengthens the brand’s visibility while expanding its reach among premium hospitality consumers.

Founded in 2019 by siblings Ani and Ayan Sanyal, Kolkata Chai Co. has built a differentiated business around authentic Indian chai, operating cafés across New York City while expanding its consumer packaged goods portfolio through chai blends and concentrates available via D2C channels and national retail partners. The company has positioned itself at the intersection of heritage, premiumisation, and modern consumer preferences, reflecting broader D2C market trends shaping global food and beverage brands.

The investment also follows the company’s growing list of strategic backers. In 2024, Emmy Award-winning actor Hasan Minhaj joined Kolkata Chai Co. as an investor and business partner, helping strengthen the brand’s cultural presence and consumer reach. With Vikas Khanna now joining through Bungalow Hospitality Investments, Kolkata Chai Co. gains access to strategic mentorship, hospitality expertise, and long-term brand-building opportunities.

For the broader D2C food and beverage ecosystem, the partnership highlights how premium Indian-origin brands are attracting influential investors while expanding internationally through omnichannel distribution, retail collaborations, and experiential hospitality. As authentic Indian flavours continue gaining mainstream acceptance worldwide, Kolkata Chai Co. is well positioned to build a globally recognised consumer brand rooted in craftsmanship, authenticity, and cultural storytelling.

The partnership also reflects a broader trend of founders, chefs, and strategic investors supporting scalable consumer brands with long-term growth potential. As Kolkata Chai Co. continues expanding its retail footprint and brand ecosystem, it stands out as another example of how modern D2C brands are taking Indian food culture to global audiences through innovation, premium positioning, and strategic partnerships.
