Barista and ITC YogaBar Join Forces to Build India’s Protein Coffee Category

Barista Coffee has partnered with ITC-owned YogaBar to launch a new range of protein-based coffee beverages, marking a significant step toward building India’s emerging functional beverage market. The collaboration combines Barista’s nationwide café network with YogaBar’s expertise in protein nutrition to create products that blend convenience, taste and health in a single offering.

The partnership introduces two protein beverages across Barista’s 500-plus cafés: the Iced Caramel Whey-chino and Mocha ProMuscle Shake. Customers can also add YogaBar whey protein to existing milk-based beverages, including lattes and cappuccinos, making protein an accessible everyday café choice.

Barista aims for protein-based beverages to contribute 10% of its total beverage portfolio within the next two years. According to CEO Rajat Agrawal, protein has moved beyond being a niche fitness product and is becoming an everyday nutrition choice. The company believes it is helping create an entirely new category at the intersection of café culture and functional nutrition.

The collaboration builds on an existing relationship, with Barista having sold YogaBar protein bars for nearly two years. After evaluating the opportunity for almost six months, both companies expanded their partnership to address growing consumer demand for healthier, functional food and beverage options.

The initiative also reflects changing consumer behaviour. Increased nutrition awareness, greater label-reading habits and the rapid growth of quick commerce have made health-focused brands easier to discover and adopt. These trends are encouraging cafés to diversify beyond traditional beverages and offer products that align with evolving lifestyles.

For YogaBar, the partnership supports its broader vision of building a healthy-lifestyle ecosystem extending beyond retail into cafés, schools, colleges, airlines and other consumption occasions. The company estimates that protein-centric categories, including protein powders, represent an industry opportunity of up to ₹10,000 crore.

Both companies also see opportunities beyond beverages. Barista has already incorporated protein-enriched bread into its sandwich range and may expand YogaBar-powered protein offerings into additional food formats as consumer acceptance grows.

As India’s health-conscious consumer base expands, the Barista–YogaBar collaboration reflects how café chains and nutrition brands are increasingly working together to create differentiated, experience-led offerings. Rather than simply launching new products, the partnership seeks to establish protein coffee as a mainstream category while strengthening both brands’ positions within India’s fast-growing functional food and beverage ecosystem.
