Ola Electric Expands Beyond EVs, Enters Energy Storage with Mahashakti

Ola Electric is expanding beyond electric vehicles with the launch of Mahashakti, its upcoming battery energy storage platform, marking a significant step in the company’s evolution into a broader clean energy and technology business.

The company has signed its first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Axis Energy, outlining the potential deployment of up to 20 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) by 2032. The partnership represents the first large-scale commercial validation of Mahashakti ahead of its official launch on August 15.

Designed for commercial, industrial, and utility-scale applications, Mahashakti will enable Ola Electric to extend its expertise in battery technology beyond electric mobility and into India’s rapidly expanding energy storage market.

Commenting on the announcement, Bhavish Aggarwal, Chairman and Managing Director of Ola Electric, said India’s energy transition will require battery storage at an unprecedented scale. He highlighted that the company’s vertically integrated approach—from battery cell technology and manufacturing to complete energy storage systems—allows Ola to deliver stronger safety, better performance, improved supply-chain security, and a lower total cost of ownership.

According to the company, the partnership with Axis Energy serves as an important early validation of Mahashakti while reinforcing strong industry interest in the platform.

Ravi Kumar Reddy Kataru, Chairman and Managing Director of Axis Energy Ventures, said battery energy storage will play a crucial role in enabling reliable, round-the-clock renewable energy as the company’s clean energy portfolio continues to expand. The partnership will evaluate indigenous battery storage solutions for future renewable energy projects.

Axis Energy is currently developing one of India’s largest storage-backed renewable energy pipelines, with over 3,750 MW of approved projects across Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, alongside an additional 3,500 MW development pipeline. These projects are expected to require large-scale battery storage to improve renewable energy integration and grid reliability.

The opportunity is substantial. According to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), India is expected to require more than 400 GWh of energy storage capacity by 2032, creating a significant long-term market for battery storage solutions.

For Ola Electric, Mahashakti represents more than a new product platform. It reflects the company’s strategy of leveraging its battery technology, manufacturing capabilities, and vertical integration to build a diversified clean energy ecosystem beyond electric vehicles.

As India accelerates its renewable energy transition, the company is positioning itself to play a larger role across both mobility and energy infrastructure, creating a new growth engine alongside its consumer EV business.
